Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake make up the largest man-made body of water in the world. The area has more than 1,004 miles of shoreline. The site acquired by the commonwealth had once been one of the most isolated and poverty stricken in the state. During the birth of these western water lands, two Kentucky towns vanished when their sites had to be cleared for the dam’s construction, which left a unique and controversial history.

Lyrics

There’s a land in the west
North of Tennessee
Bordered by the Ohio
And Mississippi

And all the lakes
With the land in between we know
These western water lands of Kentucky
Make me proud to call her home

Between the rivers
Slowly grew and made history
When the town of Golden Pond
Became a memory

And all the lakes
With the land in between we know
These western water lands of Kentucky
Make me proud to call her home

They come from near and far
To the place where two rivers run as one
The Tennessee and Cumberland
Just look at what they have become
Together as one

Break

Just below Paducah
And west of Bowling Green
There’s an inland paradise
So lovely and pristine

And all the lakes
With the land in between we know
These western water lands of Kentucky
Make me proud to call her home
And all the lakes
With the land in between we know
These western water lands of Kentucky make me proud to call her home

There’s a land in the west
North of Tennessee
Bordered by the Ohio
And Mississippi
